What would you say with Angelica Rabang

Over the last several months we asked a variety of people to take part in our second annual poster design competition in an unconventional way. Instead of asking them to create a poster, we’ve asked individuals to respond to the design brief in an interview format. We gave them one question and the freedom to explore the topic in any way they like.

Below is the response from Angelica Rabang, AIGA Honolulu president.

Look out for this and other interviews taken from the What Would You Say book available at our season 2 Poster Show, February 25th, 2012.

Question:

The theme of our season 2 poster design competition is This Way Forward: given the last 2 to 5 years “say something” to help prepare the next generation for the future. What would you say?

Angelica Rabang:

When I was a freshman in high school, I didn’t care much about my future. I spent much of my days surfing, and that was all that I wanted to do. Grades didn’t matter. Everything was short-term. I made no commitments for friends or for school. Nothing mattered to me, really, until I discovered my passion for Graphic Design. It has been 11 years since this discovery and I am delighted to say that I am still learning.
Here are some of the bigger lessons I learned thus far:

1. Search within yourself to find your passion.
There are a number of things that will make you happy, but find that special one that will bring delight with the simplest of things. Find what you believe in with your mind and heart and run with it… and if you can find a way to positively affect other people, the planet, and our prosperity with your passion, even better. Resources may be limited, but do what you can with what you have.

2. Never stop learning or growing.
Keep feeding your brain and heart with things that will help to propel you forward. (Notice that I’ve included the heart here.) You’ve made a positive impact on a local group of people… How does this make you feel? Now, imagine what can you do at a larger scale and how you’d feel then.

3. You should be happy. You deserve to be.
Your passion will bring you a variety of emotions. If for some reason you’re unhappy for too many days in a row, don’t be afraid to shift things around in order to feel that happiness again. It’s OK. Just don’t every forget number 1 and always repeat number 2.
